Mt. Olivet -
The New Market Circuit (which later became the Mt.
Nebo Charge) began in 1833. During the summers from 1833 - 1949,
services and Sunday School classes were held by people of the community in
a grove near where the old Mt. Olivet Church now stands. A church
building was constructed in 1849 after sixteen years of open-
air
assemblies.
In 1873, a new church was erected, which is part of our building
today. In 1921, a steeple and bell were added and in 1946 stained
glass windows replaced the original windows and the basement was
completely excavated.
In 1877, the circuit was divided with the southern part being called
the Fawn Grove Circuit. For several years the Mt. Nebo Charge was a
member of the Baltimore Conference.
In 1968, Mt. Nebo and Mt. Olivet
were placed with the Central Pennsylvania Conference. During this
time the charge owned a parsonage located next to the Cambria Church in
Whiteford, MD. Because of the charge change Cambria remained with
the Baltimore Conference and the parsonage was sold. For a number of
years the parsonage consisted of rented houses in the Delta-Cardiff-Fawn
Grove area. In 1968 a new parsonage was dedicated near Delta, on old
Route 74.
In July 1969, the congregation voted to construct an educational
unit. On March 21, 1971, there was a ground breaking ceremony
for
the addition of the educational building. The educational unit was
completed and the sanctuary was renovated by September 1973. The
greatest change made to the sanctuary was the removal of the front wall to
form the pulpit area. The congregation themselves
were mainly
responsible for the completion of the construction plans. |

In 1981, Mt. Olivet Church purchased land for
cemetery plots. In the fall of 1982, the congregation decided to
clear the land behind the church and use this for a children's playground
and extended parking area - this was completed in 1983.
In the fall of 1995, due to the slow deterioration of the
Sunday School rooms and nursery in the basement and the need of a new roof
on the educational unit, the trustees were asked to activate and present
a
renovation plan
to the congregation. This was accomplished and a
Congregational Meeting was held receiving approval of their
proposal. The church immediately activated an Improvement
Fund. The roof has been replaced and now volunteer members of the
congregation are active in the renovation of the Sunday School rooms and
nursery.
Mt. Olivet's future is looking much brighter. Now
that many of our long term goals are being accomplished,
our prayer is to
reach out and
provide inspiration and fellowship to
our community. |
